Peru

By Sr Anne Carbon SSC

Sister Anne, a psychiatric nurse by profession, is a Columban Sister form Cagayan de Oro. Misyon has featured a number of her articles about her missionary work in Peru.

On 10 October 2008, World Mental Health Day, the Commission on Mental Health of Ayacucho celebrated its fifth anniversary. Looking back on those five years, I cannot but thank God for the many advances that have made it possible for us to initiate and carry forward different programs at our clinic.

Beauty In Suffering

Sr Anne Carbon SSC

Sister Anne is from Cagayan de Oro and worked as a nurse before becoming a Columban Sister. She qualified in mental health nursing in England. Her article shows how important that is as she works with children traumatized by years of terrorism in the area of Peru where she lives.

Blessed Miguel Agustin Pro SJ

By Sister Mariana Reyes HGS

Sister Mariana came to the Philippines in 2000. She is a member of the Hermanas Guadalupanas de la Salle founded in Mexico in 1946 by Brother Juan Fromental Coyroche, a De La Salle Brother from France. The Sisters follow the charism of St John Baptist De La Salle and are involved in the promotion of Christian Education. Their spirituality in the service of God inspires them to look to Our Lady of Guadalupe in her role as evangelizer of the people they serve. They arrived in the Philippines in 1984. Other countries in which they work include Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Italy, Madagascar, Peru and Thailand.

A Pop Star Catholic Priest

An edited version of an article that first appeared in LADOC, Peru

With his front line role in taking religion to the masses in Brazil through the electronic media, Father Marcelo Rossi has been at the center of more than one storm in recent years. While he denies being a ‘pop star’, it is difficult to see him any other way. Newspapers describe him as ‘young, handsome and athletic, selling millions of records, with TV stations vying for his presence.’

I never took a communication course and don’t want to create a model (of mass communication). All I want is for the Church I love to grow more each day,’ says the 34-year–old priest, who is based in Santo Amaro Diocese in Sāo Paulo, Brazil’s largest city. More than 80 percent of Brazil’s 160 million people are Catholic. According to Fr Marcelo, as the priest is popularly known, about four percent of all Catholics took part in the charismatic movement in 1997, a figure that quickly grew to 12 percent. He thought it ‘could reach 40 percent’ soon.

Vengo Ya!

By Ariel Presbitero

“VENGO YA!” The taxi driver shouted to the man on the roadside. He said he would be right back as soon as he had finished his service with the present passenger. The man hoped that the driver would come back soon but he was not exactly sure how long he would have to wait.

Vengo Ya is a common expression in Peru. If you invite somebody to your house, he’s say Vengo ya! If somebody is leaving the house to do some errands, he will say Vengo ya! I really find it hard to understand the meaning of this expression. Often I get confused with its concept of time.
